Studio Virtu is a small art studio where I teach art classes to all ages.  I offer after school, homeschool, summer and adult classes.  We explore a wide variety of media here, like: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, fused glass, ceramic, fiber art and so much more!  Not only are there summer art camps, I also offer two forms of instruction during the fall and winter.

The first are weekly ongoing classes for grades 1-12.  We are able to do so much more art in these weekly classes because we overlap the projects.  For example when our clay is drying we can paint the background of a painting to be started next week, and so on.  This is the way to get the most art instruction and exposure to the most forms of art.  We explore as many art mediums as we can throughout the “year”.  This is the most cost effective way to expose your child to art and process.

The second are workshops.  These are one or two day classes concentrating on one project only.  Most of what is taught during these workshops is offered in the weekly art classes as well.

I’m Jennifer Richter and I teach all the classes and workshops at Studio Virtu.  I have an undergraduate degree in Art Education and a masters degree in Elementary Education.  I have about, choke, 30 years of teaching experience (yikes that’s hard to say.)  I have taught art in schools to PreK-12th grades.  I was also a 3rd grade classroom teacher.  And I have experience with teaching adults and young adults.  I have taught just about every medium except maybe blown glass because, well, let’s be honest….I have an addiction to art supplies and how to use them. Ha!  Seriously, I find the greatest joy when someone thinks they can’t possible do something and then they find out they can! I have a wonderful husband, four unbelievably awesome kids, and two crazy dogs.

When I am not teaching classes or workshops I am usually creating my own art.  My favorite is painting portraits in oil.  I love to paint, and paint most subjects.  I have been delving into the world of abstract painting lately, which is a blast.  But I also love sculpture, and jewelry making too.

Sometimes my daughter, Jordan, can be found helping teach these classes.  Jordan is a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in Fine Art.  Jordan makes her living as an artist doing drawings of homes, oil paintings, ceramics and metals.  She’s a talented addition to Studio Virtu and keeps me laughing every single day.
